Duration: 8 months Smiths Contract Value: £2.85 million
Project Overview – Construction of a Sainsburys superstore on the former Isles of Scilly Heliport at the seat front, Penzance.
Scope of Work – The site was also a former landfill site that required dynamic compaction techniques and driven pre-cast piles to mitigate ground settlement that might occur following the raising of site levels and to support the new structure.
The floor slab design was changed from a traditional mesh reinforced concrete slab to fibre reinforcement, saving several weeks on the completion programme.
The building stood on 670 precast concrete piles and the internal drainage within the building was all hung on metal tie bars from the fibre reinforced concrete slab.
The completed project used circa 65,000 tonne of imported stone from nearby quarries.
