The Weekend Reno – Kitchen Refresh

This checklist is designed for a “High Impact, Low Budget” kitchen refresh that you can realistically complete in a weekend. It focuses on the “Cabinet Refresh” strategy, which provides the biggest visual change for the least spend.

Phase 1: The Shopping List

Don’t start until you have every item. Most “weekend” projects fail because of a mid-Saturday dash to Screwfix!

Hardware & Surfaces:

  • Cabinet Handles/Knobs: (Count your existing ones twice to be sure!)
  • New Taps: A “Swan Neck” or “Pull-out Spray” tap in matte black or brushed brass.
  • Cabinet Paint or New Doors: If painting, use a dedicated Satin or Gloss Furniture Paint (no primer needed for most modern brands like Frenchic or Farrow & Ball Modern Eggshell).

Tools & Prep (The “Don’t Skip” Items):

  • Sugar Soap: Essential for removing cooking grease so paint actually sticks.
  • Microfibre Cloths & Scourers.
  • Painter’s Tape: (The “Frog Tape” brand is best for clean lines on worktops).
  • Small Foam Rollers: For a smooth, “spray-like” finish on doors.
  • Angled Sash Brush: For getting into the grooves of Shaker-style doors.

Phase 2: The “48-Hour” Game Plan

Saturday: The “Dirty” Work

  • 09:00 – De-clutter: Clear the worktops completely.
  • 10:00 – Prep is Queen: Remove all handles. Wash every cupboard front twice with Sugar Soap.
  • 12:00 – The Light Sand: Lightly scuff the surface of the doors. You aren’t removing the finish, just taking off the shine.
  • 13:00 – First Coat: Use your foam roller for the main panels and the brush for the edges.
  • 16:00 – Grout/Tiles: While the first coat dries, use a grout pen or tile paint to refresh the splashback.
  • 18:00 – Second Coat: Apply the second coat of furniture paint.

Sunday: The Transformation

  • 10:00 – Plumbing: Swap the taps. (Remember to turn off the water isolation valves under the sink first!)
  • 12:00 – Hardware: Once the paint is “touch dry” (usually 4+ hours), screw on your new handles.
  • 14:00 – Silicone: Remove any mouldy silicone around the sink and replace with a fresh white or clear bead.
Check your cupboard hinge compatibility DIY image

Pro Tip for UK Reno’s:

Check your cupboard hinge compatibility! If you are replacing doors entirely (rather than painting), most UK retailers like IKEA, Howdens, and Wren use standard 35mm hinge holes, but the placement can vary by a few millimetres. Always measure from the top of the door to the centre of the hinge hole before ordering.

Kitchen Refresh Cost Estimator (2026 DIY Estimates)

To help you see how this “Weekend Refresh” stacks up against a full renovation, here is a cost estimator for 2026.

This table assumes a medium-sized kitchen (approx. 12–15 cabinet fronts) and a DIY approach. Using this on your Matrix, this project would sit firmly in the “Low Cost / High Impact” quadrant.

Item Estimated Cost (Low) Estimated Cost (High) Why the difference?
Cabinet Paint (2.5L) £25 £75 Budget brands (Wickes/Ronseal) vs. Premium (Farrow & Ball/Little Greene).
New Handles (x15) £45 £135 Simple T-bars (£3/ea) vs. Knurled solid brass/designer (£9/ea).
Modern Mixer Tap £60 £250 Standard chrome mixer vs. Pull-out spray or matte black finish.
Grout & Silicone Refresher £15 £30 Basic white grout pen vs. anti-mould professional silicone kits.
Prep Kit (Sugar Soap, Sandpaper) £15 £25 Bulk buys from Screwfix vs. specialty individual items.
Rollers & Brushes £10 £35 Disposable foam rollers vs. high-end sash brushes.
TOTAL £170 £550

Matrix Comparison: Refresh vs. Full Refit

To give your renovators context, you can share these “Rule of Thumb” figures for 2026:

  • The Weekend Refresh (DIY): £170 – £550
  • Matrix Slot: Quick Win (Low Effort, High Impact).
  • The Professional Respray: £800 – £1,600
  • Matrix Slot: Strategic Investment (Medium Cost, Very High Impact).
  • A Full Budget Kitchen Refit: £5,000 – £10,000
  • Matrix Slot: Major Project (High Cost, Total Transformation).

Budget Tip:

If you find that your current hinges are “soft close” but the doors are slamming, don’t replace the hinges! You can buy clip-on soft-close dampers for about £2–£5 each that snap onto your existing hinges. It’s a tiny cost that adds a “luxury” feel to your refresh.
