Winter presents the perfect opportunity to tackle interior renovations whilst staying warm indoors.

Wallpapering can dramatically transform a room, whether you’re adding a bold feature wall or creating subtle elegance throughout your space. However, cold and wet winter months present unique challenges that DIY enthusiasts need to navigate carefully.

Preparing Your Walls for Wallpaper

Proper preparation is crucial, especially during winter when damp and condensation are common concerns.

  • Ensure walls are completely dry – use a dehumidifier if necessary, as moisture will prevent wallpaper adhesive from bonding properly
  • Fill any cracks or holes with suitable filler and sand smooth once dry
  • Wash walls with sugar soap to remove grease and dirt
  • Apply a primer or sizing solution to create a barrier against moisture and help adhesive work effectively despite cooler temperatures

Applying Wallpaper in Winter Conditions

Temperature matters when wallpapering. Keep your room at a consistent 15-20°C and avoid draughts by closing windows and doors.

  • Use a spirit level to mark your first vertical line, ensuring a straight start
  • Apply paste evenly, following manufacturer’s instructions for your specific wallpaper type
  • Fold the paper as recommended and allow appropriate soaking time – you may need slightly longer in colder conditions
  • Smooth from the centre outwards using a wallpaper brush or smoother, eliminating air bubbles
  • Wipe away excess paste immediately with a damp sponge
  • Trim edges carefully with a sharp knife against a straight edge
  • Resist using heaters placed too close to walls, as uneven drying causes peeling

Essential tools: paste brush, scissors, craft knife, plumb line or spirit level, seam roller, sponge, bucket, pasting table, and appropriate adhesive.

Removing Old Wallpaper

When you’re ready for a fresh look, efficient removal is essential. The most effective method employs a powerful wallpaper steamer, which softens adhesive quickly without the mess of soaking.

  • Score the wallpaper surface lightly with a scoring tool, allowing steam to penetrate
  • Hold the steamer plate against sections for 30 seconds
  • Scrape away softened paper with a stripping knife
  • Work systematically across the wall, keeping the steamer moving to avoid damaging plaster
  • Wash walls thoroughly with warm water afterwards
  • Allow to dry completely before redecorating

Winter’s cooler temperatures actually help here, as steam remains effective longer on cold walls.

Wallpaper Steamer Rental?

For one-off projects, hiring a steamer (such as the excellent Steam Team Wallpaper Stripper) is a cost-effective option at approximately £17.50 per day.
