HGV Assistant – Night Shift Workshop

Salary – £14.00 per hour

We are currently seeking a HGV Assistant to work a 48 hours a week over 4 nights Monday-Friday. Hourly rate reflective of night time hours.

We specialise in Construction, Waste Management, Plant Hire, Demolition and Transport operations

Smiths operate an internal Workshop to carry out repairs and inspections of their extensive fleet of trucks which includes Volvo and Scania vehicles.

Responsibilities for a HGV Assistant;

  • Assist with vehicle inspections
  • Carrying repairs to defects within skill set.
  • Servicing HGV vehicles and greasing when required
  • Vehicle break testing under supervision, when training has been given and senior members of staff have signed this off.
  • Ability to work on HGV’s in a safe and efficient manner to timescales
  • Ensure the work is carried out in accordance with company policies, to a high standard and in line with best practice
  • Wear the appropriate PPE
  • To follow all instruction and direction from the Workshop Manager
  • Carry out best practice and safe working practices
  • Always inspect tooling ensuring it is not defective and fit for use
  • Report any malfunction of equipment/tools immediately

Workshop duties will include:

  • Manual handling when required
  • Making sure that the workshop is kept clean and tidy to include the canteen
  • Cleaning up spillages in the workshop
  • Replenish dispensing oils and lubricant in the workshop when required.
  • Organise and park vehicles safely in the designated areas

Desired skills

  • HGV licence would be an advantage
  • Mechanical background
  • Fork lift licence
