Due to continuing growth in its customer base, five new Volvo FE and FL trade waste Rear End Loaders (REL) have entered service with Smiths Trade Waste Division. The company have also ordered eight FL skip loaders.
The order for RELs comprised four 26 tonne GVW, FE-320, 6×2 rearsteer chassis and one FL-280 4×2, 18 tonne GVW rigid. The latter’s short wheelbase being particularly useful when collecting from sites with tight access. Bodywork on the FL is from the T1 range by Heil Farid. The FEs are equipped with bodies from the Heil Farid Big Bite Junior range.
The trucks were supplied by Truck and Bus Wales & West at Avonmouth. All the REL chassis, including the 18 tonne GVW FL, were specified with the 6-speed Allison automatic gearbox. All the trucks are equipped with AEBS. Specification of the FL-280 skiploader includes Volvo’s ZTO1006, 6 speed manual gearbox and bodywork from the Hyva NG2012 range.
Smiths (Gloucester) Ltd. Transport Operations Manager, Simon Allen, says that the company currently operates around 50 RCV / REL vehicles of which eight are now on Volvo chassis. “Over the years we have operated them, Volvo reliability has proved to be bullet proof. We also have a very good rapport with Truck and Bus Wales & West. Fuel economy is good too and we are seeing a 2mpg improvement with these Euro-6 trucks over their Euro-5 equivalents.”
