"'In September 2008, Stroud District Council entered into a contract with Smith's (Gloucester) Ltd for a 12 month period for the bulking, baling and resale of recyclates. This was as a result of the Council's primary waste collection contractor notifying the Council that they would cease to collect recycling material on the morning of 18th September.

The transfer of operation from the original contractors depot to Smiths' Moreton Valence depot went incredibly smoothly given the timescales under which all parties were operating. From a customer's perspective, it was business as usual and this was wholly down to the cooperative attitude which was in place between Smiths and the members of the District Council staff.'

"Soho Coffee Company was approached by Smiths to become our Waste Managent provider; we up on the initial contact and had a series of meetings.

Keen to maintain our relationship with a national waste service provider, we stuck with our existing company for an additional seven months. When we realised that our relationship was not going to progress we returned to Smiths Waste Management.

On resuming contact, Smiths have instantly met every need that a local council and a national provider couldn't even return the phone calls on. We now enjoy a service that has not hic-cupped to date, has delivered a 45% cost saving and we even have pleasant tidy drivers which is an all time first for us as a business.

Smiths now provide us with waste solutions that deliver a sound environmental boast to suit our needs where we recycle some 85% of our waste streams. In addition we now know that our waste doesn't travel needless miles but is being dealt with locally.

During the initial steps we have been guided with interest and enthusiasm by Smiths and we are now genuinely on track with our waste management plans.
