"Our greatest strength and most valuable asset is our people!" Alan Smith, MD Smith's (Gloucester) Ltd

'Many of our people have been with the company for a long time. It is their experience and knowledge which allows us to meet our customers' needs. Practical experience comes from doing the work. Each completed project or finished job further improves our knowledge, experience and expertise of the industry.'

Smiths are a family company, owned and run by the Smith family since the business began in 1982. They are still wholly committed to the business with two generations actively involved day to day. This engenders a community culture which rewards hard work, teamwork and a commitment to customer service that can be lost in larger corporate structures.

  • Smiths are an environmentally aware company, operating in line with its Corporate Social Responsibility. We are committed to advancing our own Environmental Agenda by striving to decrease the impact of our activities on the environment of the community in which we, our employees and our customers live and work.
  • Smiths Waste Management facility at Moreton Valence recycles over 75% of all waste delivered to the gate. This compares favourably with a national average of 65% and a regional average of 70%. Some waste streams such as plastics and metal recycle up to 100% of product collected.
  • Smiths Construction and Demolition ensures that all recyclable material created by their projects is transferred to Moreton Valence for processing. If appropriate, up to 100% of waste material can be recycled and reused on site, cutting down on CO2 emissions from transport to the facility. The resultant aggregate and soils are reused within our construction projects.
  • Smiths Transport aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 7% by 2010.
  • Smiths have reduced its contribution to landfill by 20% since 2001.
  • Smiths extends the life of its skips and metal bins by repairing and reusing them on site.
  • Smiths are investing heavily in cutting-edge renewable energy technology to further reduce waste products transferred to landfill sites.
